How Do I Connect to the BC Professional Teaching Standards?
The BCTF Professional Standards for teachers exist to guide us in our work and our every day lives. When we agree to be an educator in BC, we agree to follow these guidelines. I think that these guidelines help to shape us into more responsible and more effective teachers, who focus on the well being of their students.
My favorite line from the BCTF Professional Standards is the second half of the first standard. This line states “Teachers care for students and act in their best interest”. I believe that it is vital to put this standard first, because our first priority is the student, always. As a teacher, we are likely the most present and interactive adult in a child’s life, and it is important that we take that role seriously, and make sure we are advocating for our students.
