The province of British Columbia began developing a new curriculum in 2010, and it was instituted in elementary classrooms in 2017. By 2017 I was graduating highschool and didn’t have the opportunity to be educated within the new curriculum. That made it a bit more challenging to learn to use the curriculum, as I had no previous experience with it. It is incredibly difficult to change the framework of how education exists within your personal life experience, and to accept a new conceptual understanding of education.

The curriculum as it exists now is very open ended, and gives a lot of control and responsibility to the teacher. While this is incredibly empowering and gives me a lot of freedom to shape my classroom and my content how I want to, it is also so very different from how I was taught. This shift away from textbook teaching is drastic, and while intimidating, it is going to be so beneficial for so many students. The freedom to adjust and implement the curriculum as we feel is necessary for our class, can be life changing for our students and their long term educational success.
